Don't You Honey Me

Terms of endearment. Such a misnomer. They have always made me cringe. I am an Indian, so being called sweetheart, dear, honey, by our parents was not a common thing growing up. These words are, just like plenty of other things, a foreign export. I have nothing against Western concepts being assimilated into our society. Mutual exchange of customs has always been a norm. And globalisation has only helped speed the process. The more we are alike in terms of the good things, the better. The world will be a better place. No, we won't lose our identities if we let go of some of our more backward traditions. Negatives do not define us. Positives do. But, when we are exporting certain cultural things from anywhere in the world, we are also exporting the history associated with them. Nothing really exists without precedence. I am simply tired of reminding people that I do not like being called "dear" and "honey". There even exists a Bengali term of endearment that is spoken with the same tone of faux familiarity and a hint of condescension as these English words. That famous term is "babu". Older people calling me that is fine (does that make me a practitioner of ageism somehow?). But, really when a peer calls me that it's an absolute no-no. Terms of endearment are mostly used by people who tend to habitually use them while talking to pretty much everyone they know. I once knew a girl (who is happily married now) in my UG class who said the word "babu" so often, she once called a professor that, by mistake of course. You get the picture right? If a loved one, in a truly endearing way calls me any of these terms, I will still cringe because of my past and ongoing experience with these words. They all seem seeped in dubious hypocrisy and insincere candour. They try to forge a forced bond of familiarity between the speaker and the one spoken to, no matter whether their encounter lasts 5 minutes or continues sporadically over decades.

I have been trying to find out if my sentiments are echoed around the world or if there is just something wrong with me. I have compiled a list of articles you might be interested in reading on this issue and gain some perspective.

  1. DON’T Call Me Dear!
  2. Don't patronise me, Darling
  3. Frankly, my dear: Why Terms of Endearment are Not Ok
  4. I'm not your honey, darling, sweetheart, dear, ducky, or any other diminutive creature
Don't forget to share your thoughts on this.

Links I Love

  1. Do you know what psychopomps are? I tweeted today it's my word of the day. Read about 10 psychopomps from ancient mythology.
  2. The world is not skinny vs fat. "Bodies Aren't Ugly. Bullying Is" campaign created by  "The Militant Baker" is a powerful photo series. Check it out here. There has been 588 submissions as I type.
  3. The Outsider by Albert Camus is one of my favourite books. The Outsider (aka The Stranger) and other really short classics that you should read up without any excuses.
  4. This Pantene #WhipIt campaign made by BBDO Guerrero that beautifully shows the stereotypes both men & women view each other through.
  5. Did you know: the first interracial TV kiss was in 1968 between Captain Kirk and Lieutenant Uhura in Star Trek. 10 memorable and defiant firsts in TV history.
  6. These women are the bomb!
  7. Loving these colour photos from the First World War.
  8. This tweet talking about the Indian politicians in the face of the recent LGBTQ debacle is appropriately funny.

Stylish Life

When you love fashion, it seeps into every bit of your life. Life lessons learned, come to light in a style context. Like searching for your soul in a pair of shoes, there are certainly many ways fashion can be the vehicle of wisdom. From working a retail job that teaches you about blogging, to seeing that all the "fashion rules" are meant to be broken, and how even the most casual piece of clothing can be the hot trend of the summer (never, say never!). This week we have a great mix of life lessons with summer essentials to get you through the weekend. So take a look, it's quite an amazing roundup this week! Links á la Mode: The IFB Weekly Roundup : June 27th

I am super happy to have been featured in this week's roundup. I feel kind of great to have IFB's support behind the post I did on the Oasap scam. I have already read some of these other posts. I will be reading them all. Please do the same. Leave behind your thoughts on it all.

The Wide, Wild World of Fashion

I love to think about fashion, beauty, and style outside of what we wear on a daily basis.  What's the history of a perfume or designer?  How did they evolve into what they are today?  How does that impact the fashion cycle around us? This week's LALM is about the wide and wild world of fashion around us-- from designers to brief nuggets of history. To iconic movements and figures (the flapper!) to reinventing and revitalizing old trends (crimping hair!). And of course-- looks into icons and industry people. It's all a wonderful reminder that there isn't always anything new in fashion, but there are always new ways to explore it, challenge it, and investigate it.

Friday Link Love - Body Acceptance

"Wabi-sabi suggests that beauty is a dynamic event that occurs between you and something else.
Beauty can spontaneously occur at any moment
given the proper circumstances, context, or point of view.
Beauty is thus an altered state of consciousness, an extraordinary moment of poetry and grace."
-
Leonard Koren, Wabi-Sabi: For Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers
Okay people you know I am a big girl in a world where people generally bash on all kinds of body types, be it skinny or fat or everything in between. You all complain about your flab or untoned arms and big thighs and whatnot irrespective of what size you are. And I always tell you to love yourself regardless of what a few petty people have to point out. Self love is a right we all need to practice because we are awesome! Yes it is ok to feel crappy on certain days, we are not bright yellow daisies with sunshine shooting out of our orifices that we have to be bright and cheery everyday. Don't let any moron tell you otherwise. Don't let the moronic voice in your own head tell you otherwise. Work for the body you want to have or don't work for the body at all and love yourself regardless of it. You deserve it!
Here are a few links I came across the internet that will cheer you up.

beauty doesn't have a weight limit
via
A guy can pick you up off your feet, and it won't break his back.

Wearing whatever you want is a political statement. Join the revolution. Throw style rules out the window. Wear the tutu. Wear the horizontal stripes. Wear the turquoise skinny jeans. Wear the see-through blouse. Wear the bikini. Wear the sweat pants. Wear the shirt that says “Does this shirt make me look fat?”. Wear whatever it is that makes you happy. This is your life.
You are fucking beautiful. I'm saying this with a straight face and seriously meaningful look where I maintain eye contact for an uncomfortable amount of time. I know you don't feel like you fit into the category of gorgeous that our world creates. I know that its hard. I know that its a daily battle. But fuck their fascist beauty standards. The second you stop looking for a skinny model in your mirror and start looking at YOU... is the second you will start to appreciate what you are. Stop looking for flaws. Stop looking for differences. You are perfect. You are more than enough. You are the best thing that has ever happened to you. And you are fucking beautiful.

attractive and fat

Hey Mike, I know you've been flooded with mail regarding your comments on sizeism, but I wanted to take a second to write you about a project I've been working on.
..
P.S. If you would like to offer me a "substantial amount" to stop wearing your brand so my association won't "cause significant damage to your image", don't hesitate to email me. I respect you as a business man, and my agent and I would be happy to contribute in furthering your established success.

P.P.S. You should know your Large t-shirt comfortably fits a size 22. You might want to work on that.

❝Because yes, the idea that you must be a size 0 to be sexually desirable to an attractive man is hurtful and damaging. But what bothers me more is that it's just dumb and untrue. It's not that Lena Dunham is living in a fantasy world. It's that her critics won't open their eyes to this one.
-

I do not watch "Girls". But I felt the controversy regarding this issue of how women who are not sizes 0-4 are not attractive to men who are conventionally good looking was relevant to this post. I also like what Patrick Wilson's wife Dagmara Dominczyk said about the whole issue.

Wrapping up for now with this : Romwe Memorial Day Sale, 20%off selected items from 05/25/2013 to 05/27/2013
Summer holidays are coming and that means beach, sunshine, barbecue and more.
Are you ready for your holiday with bikinis, sunglasses and hats?
Well get on with it! You can't be thinking of hiding inside now, can you!

The Revolutionary Act Of Being Seen

For the longest time the primary battle women had to fight was that of invisibility and inaudibility. In a household the women were to go around taking care of things while not being seen doing so, a good woman didn't let anyone know she works hard or works at all. A good woman let her man(father or brother or husband or son) say the final word. But we are not just women, we are people. We will be seen and heard. And keep working for a future where our counterparts in other repressive regions get a say in their own lives if not today then at least tomorrow. We will not be shamed or despised for who we are. Women are shamed, ridiculed, their bodies mutilated in various parts all over the world. They are stereotyped and mocked. It happens everywhere. And it needs to stop.
Misogynist - if you are a man, I loathe you for bathing in your male privilege. Misogynist - if you are a woman, I pity you that you still do not see.
I am sharing a few rad articles and photos I came across the internet in the past few days which made me feel happy that these people exist. Something I would never have known if the big bad internet did not exist. After all the internet is making people accountable for injustice a little bit more day by day.

Just read the comments *here*. I thought I was the only one! I went to the doctor with severe foot pain and this is the advice he gave me. I had to resort to google to fix myself ultimately. My problem was not weight related at all.
❝The possibility that someone above a size 14 could be comfortable enough with her body to wear, say, a crop top simply does not exist for many people...(1) Most girls I know (of any size) dress for themselves, not anyone else...(2) I’m sure some women (again, of any and all body types) are dressing to get attention. And guess what? That’s OK too!❞

❝Since fat bodies are so politicized, dressing them becomes a political act; I’ve talked to a lot of fat girls who choose to wear loud outfits precisely because they want to be visible in a world that tells them they should hide.
-

❝I had just told him about a date that had deeply hurt my feelings and another whose reaction to rejection had bordered on harassment. His idea of an equivalently mean act was someone showing up on a date at a size he deemed unacceptable.
❝How are they so confident that there is no one overweight in my life, past or present, that I love and care about and don’t want to hear reduced to a punchline?
-

I am not hiding my body just because it offends your tiny brain; via
❝And I felt great. From now on, I'm not going to say a word. I'm going to just stand there, fearless, and put the shame and negativity where it belongs: on the perpetrator and not the victim.
 -
We have all faced it. We have all just inserted our headphones and walked on.

You never know where a person stands in their journey. Stop judging. Stop reducing them to punchlines. Stop harassing. Stop being a dick in general.

I again got featured in the IFB Links a la Mode this week. I hadn't submitted anything ever since the last time I got featured. So this is something nice to hear before I start the day. I will be visiting all the others who are on the list as well.  I think so should you guys.

We’re already halfway through the first month of 2013 but that doesn’t mean bloggers aren’t still in reflective mode: creating resolutions for the coming year and looking to up-coming trends, whilst also looking back on the trends of 2012. There’s also a reflective element in many of the posts this week over blogging and how that might change over the coming year, not just on a personal level but more generally too. There’s also a good dose of travel inspired posts this week for those who are trying to beat the January blues and jet off somewhere sunny. And if you’re not jetting off somewhere away from the cold, make sure to check out the great how to layer below:

Perceptions,Facts,Beauty,Pure Beauty

Our Twisted Perceptions

weight stereotyping
Glamour mag USA - weight stereotyping

The Obvious Fact

If Barbie was an actual woman, she would be 5’9” tall, 39” bust,18” waist, 33” hips, size 3 shoes. Barbie calls this “full figure”, likes her weight at 110 lbs at 5’9” tall, weighing 110 lbs, Barbie has BMI of 16.24 & fit the weight criteria for an anorexic. She likely wouldn't menstruate. If Barbie was real, she’d walk on all fours due to her proportions. Slumber Party Barbie introduced in 1965, came with a BA scale permanently set @ 110 lbs with a book entitled “How to Lose Weight” directions stated “Don’t eat.”

The Beauty Spectrum

Irving Penn - Alexandra Beller, 1999 and the pits of tumblr

As much as we get targeted and judged for the way we look we get equally judged for the way we dress. Our personal style is the most potent way of letting others glimpse into our personalities and who we are as people. So being judged for that is not something to be waved aside casually.
Say No To Fashion Bullying with FAB Fashion Against Bullying! They mailed me a few days back and I think their initiative is commendable. As fashion and style bloggers several people around the world has brought in a perspective and that too with phenomenal strength into the mainstream thinking about fashion and body image. It is not about hating something you do not resemble or relate to, but about accepting them and respecting the difference. I have never been that fat girl. I am a person with strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, opinions and silences. I will always respect you no matter how different you are from me as long as you respect me or someone else who is vastly different from you.
"Being judged for your look because you don’t dress like everyone else is no joking matter. Remember when you were still in high school? Maybe you might have been a victim of such bullying yourself! "Weirdo", "ugly", "short", "nerd", "fat", “fag” are words that bullies often use to hurt.
It’s time to make a difference now. Take a stand & be an inspiration to those who are still suffering in fear silently. Give them courage to be strong. Let your photo contribution & words of encouragement be the light of hope for them, because hope is good. Hope is always good."

And I am wrapping up with this ... you may not understand the language..but I have too many goosebumps not to share this with you..give it a try even if you do not understand the words.
I think my heart will explode..beautiful,brilliant do not begin to describe this rendition of Aankhon Ke Saagar by Shafqat Amaanat Ali Khan...my heart and body are actually aching with a longing..my words are neither eloquent nor poetic enough to translate the beauty and passion contained in this..

Links à la Mode - I'm on the list again!

Art At The Heart

For many of this week's submissions, art was the center theme. From DIY projects to festivals, museum exhibits and dramatic runway sets - there are so many ways that art manifests itself in the world of fashion, not just in the clothes we wear. We create it, it moves us, it changes our mood and makes our world a more beautiful and magical place. I loved reading posts about the Costume Institute's new exhibit, Chanel's crystal runway set - and even how to make a glitzy pair of Mui Mui-inspired sunnies.

3 Chic Hairstyles With Braids

I came across these a couple of days ago. I have linked them to the main sources where you can go and read the instructions in detail and explore their blogs. The hairstyles might be a bit tricky to pick up at first but the end results would be worthy.

Braid up the side- Section out all of the hair from your ear forward on one side of your part, and clip everything else aside for later.
-Proceed to braid up the side by your ear.  You can do one braid, two braid, or even three if your hair is thick enough.  You can also do any type of braid - fishtail, regular, twist braid, whatever you want.

-Once your braids are complete, combine them with the remaining hair and put it in a ponytail as you normally would. Read about the rest of the hairstyles on her blog.

Crown of Braids- Pay attention to steps 3 & 4. This should be easy enough with a few bobby pins and a bit of hairspray.

Half Braid- Just see the pictures for a guide to do the hairstyle on your own. Check her blog out for more amazing hairstyles with her easy to do picture guides.

Links a la Mode - this week's 20 best blogs voted by IFB

My blog post, Shoe Love - Platforms and Wedges has been selected for this week's IFB Links à  la Mode . This was the very 1st post I submitted and was absolutely sure I won't make it. I am so happy!

The Eyes of March

Edited By Taylor Davies

Here we are, the first day of March - can you believe it? Spring will officially start this month, flowers will start to bloom (we hope!) and winter will finally start to let us out of it's icy grip. This week's Links a la Mode selections run the gamut from fashion week round ups to DIY projects and runway color inspirations.

A friendly reminder to all of you who graciously submit your posts for LALM: If your post is chosen for the round up, you must post the code from this post onto your own blog. The purpose of our round up is not only to share your links with our readership, but to share your fellow bloggers' links with your readers as well. This allows each blogger to get 20 outbound links to their blog, and yours too! Many of the blogs we have been selecting lately have not been posting the code, so we are going to be policing this more carefully in the future. Thanks again everyone!

Fatshion Inspirations

I believe I was always a well dressed person. I had an eye for things which were age appropriate but had a good appeal to the aesthetic senses. I was always aware of fashion and style but i was never too bothered with what is "in" or "out".

"I cannot agree with the painters who claim superciliously that a layman can understand nothing of painting, and that he can best show his appreciation of their works by silence and a chequebook....art is a manifestation of emotion, and emotion speaks a language that all may understand. But I will allow that the critic who has no practical knowledge of technique is seldom able to say anything on the subject of real value."-from "The Moon & Sixpence" by Maugham.

This quote which I came across recently in the book I am reading seemed could be used to describe any form of art and fashion is very much a form of art. Your individual style is a form of self-expression. Even if you think you don't care about appearances that checked shirt and nerd glasses you wear or the cotton shirts and kurtas you wear is definitely a way to tell the world a bit about who you are. I believe in looking good on occasions. Looking polished, prepared and appropriate for any good job nowadays requires the kind of knowledge I believe I have and so should everyone because the company is hiring not just your talent you are going to be someone representing the company. I don't believe wearing only branded clothes makes you a good dresser, it is mostly what you make of what you have got. Smart dressing is the key.
Being a fat girl I have often been frustrated while shopping but i have also found great pieces. Lots of slimmer people I know dress quite shabbily but they believe they don't. There's nothing wrong in dressing in whichever way you want but you should not have delusions about it because more than often these are the ones who criticise other's clothes and that is not fair. A person should never be judged on appearances.
Big Girl in a Skinny World was a column by a stylist named Ashley Falcon in the Marie Claire website that i came across after random googling about curvy fashion. There were some blogs she suggested about fatshion bloggers and i was introduced to this whole new world of fabulous fatshionistas who are not afraid to love and wear awesome clothes and call themselves fat outright rather than use the euphemistic term curvy to talk about themselves. Even a skinny girl can have curves, because curves are about proportions not size. I am a US size 12-14 and I don't think I have ever been any lower than that. I may crib about my body sometimes but I have always been very comfortable in my skin and I have enough confidence to not cringe when someone calls me fat. Here's a fun fact- I am fat! And i can rock clothes which a lot of haters can't!
All you people who patiently read this (or skipped portions) go out there and rock what you wear with aplomb be it casual plain i-don't-care-about-dressing-up outfit or a chic in your face outfit.Skinny, curvy, fat or whatever you are love your self and let the haters talk to the hand.
