I Will Hold On Hope

I love the sound of Mumford & Sons. If you haven't heard of them, then please do. Especially check out this song that I linked to. Even the video is just so charming. I have been listening to them for so long. But, only saw this delightful video after someone shared it with me a few days back. It is just the right dose of kooky that I love so much.
The Cave
Coming to the outfit, I should mention this is my first true outfit photoshoot that has been shot outdoors. I was so bored of photographing in my room (even though it serves as a lovely backdrop). Unlike other times I did not feel awkward posing for my photographer in such a public place. Is it age or comfort? I don't know. I am getting old, that much is for sure. I get back pains way too often. Then again my perennial craving for all things chocolate has increased even more. I refuse to believe that is a sign of ageing.  At 5'2" I console myself, saying I am average height. But, one thing I realised after looking at these photos is that I am painfully short. Given how dreamy and bohemian I feel just looking at the outfit, I think the photos go perfectly with that theme.
About the clothes - I love this crochet cardigan to death. I think it is the prettiest and most delicate thing I own. The polka dotted pants are from Romwe. At first they were quite a disappointment, because even though it was mentioned they are harem pants, they looked way more fitted on the website. But, I have come to love it. These are now my stylish pyjamas. I wore these to work this week and felt so effing cool thinking "Yay I am so cool, I wear pyajamas and sneakers to office!"
I had also done a pop art-ish eyeliner look with this which unfortunately was ruined by the time we got around to the shoot. I am planning on doing a tutorial sort of on that look soon.

bye bye birdies

Links I Love

  1. Do you know what psychopomps are? I tweeted today it's my word of the day. Read about 10 psychopomps from ancient mythology.
  2. The world is not skinny vs fat. "Bodies Aren't Ugly. Bullying Is" campaign created by  "The Militant Baker" is a powerful photo series. Check it out here. There has been 588 submissions as I type.
  3. The Outsider by Albert Camus is one of my favourite books. The Outsider (aka The Stranger) and other really short classics that you should read up without any excuses.
  4. This Pantene #WhipIt campaign made by BBDO Guerrero that beautifully shows the stereotypes both men & women view each other through.
  5. Did you know: the first interracial TV kiss was in 1968 between Captain Kirk and Lieutenant Uhura in Star Trek. 10 memorable and defiant firsts in TV history.
  6. These women are the bomb!
  7. Loving these colour photos from the First World War.
  8. This tweet talking about the Indian politicians in the face of the recent LGBTQ debacle is appropriately funny.
  9. If you love Bollywood and think posters are an art form then this Minimal Bollywood Posters page is for you.

The Son Of Man

Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present.

Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte about his 1964 painting "The Son of Man".

The Son of Man ring

Got this ring from Quirky-me. I redeemed this with my chic points on Chictopia. It arrived a few days back in this little black box, within 15 days of shipping confirmation. And it is made of metal not plastic as I had thought it would be which is even better.
It's cool isn't it?

Winning A Fashion Show

This semester has been my most active period in college. I have been going to the campus everyday. That may not be a shocker to university going students all across the globe, but for people who know me this is a shocker. Our university is like a bohemian city inside the city. Attendance is not very strict here (70% minimum I think it is), but I have a reputation of being one of the most carefree(careless?) bunkers in my university. Anyhow this semester we have our film making course and I have been going everyday for the shooting and then editing. Among this crazy schedule was about to to happen our college fest which in itself wouldn't have been a big deal and I would have happily not gone because I am a happy woman spending endless hours in the editing room. But then my friends said they wanted me to participate in the fashion show along with them. I readily agreed and endless phone calls and emails and hurried meetings(on my part, they met up and practiced their choreography everyday) later we were finally ready to walk the stage.
!And We Won!
The judge (Parambrata Chatterjee) said we reminded him of his childhood. The theme of the competition was "100 years of Indian Cinema" and we did a tribute to Bengali classic and cult films. Yours truly did all the make-up and the entire look for Ranjana of "Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona"(2011). The other films we chose were, "Jalsaghar"(1958), "Meghe Dhaka Tara"(1960), "Charulata"(1964), "Sagina Mahato"(1970), "Calcutta 71"(1972), "Paromitar Ek Din"(2000) and "Chokher Bali"(2003). If you love cinema then you are welcome to watch all these films (even if with subtitles).

Feeling Hippie/Happy

I should ideally be on a detox after last night(a post on that will come up soon enough) but well I am not. I have made friends because of this blog I can actually dance with without inhibitions. I suck at all that jazz unless I am around people I can relate to on a certain level and am comfortable with.
I have found some great photos on fb and tumblr since I woke up this morning. Yes Sunday mornings are reserved for all this only. Also FYI there are people for whom it is impossible to take bad pictures, I am the opposite.
These photographs are all on my tumblr so you guys can go check that out if you like.Try and relax the last few hours of the weekend. This Sunday has been positively crisp in attitude for me so far. ♥

High & Low = Per-fat-shion

See my awesomely intelligent spin on the word "perfection" and "fatshion"? No? No? Now? No? Ah leave it all you ...
I have wanted an asymmetric skirt/top for more than a couple of years now. I remember trying the first high-low skirt I saw (that too in supposedly my size!) in a shop that must not be named and dear god my fat ass was bursting, the proportion was all wrong as well and it was more funny than embarrassing(I seldom get embarrassed about my body while shopping so there you go..). So I decided it was one of those things I will not try ever but lust after whenever I see someone wearing it and silently weep. Meh! All that went flying out the window when I saw this dress on Sugarlips and I realised the size should fit me well and stretch too if need be because of the material. I wasn't wrong! I got this a few days back in the mail and I was so tired that day I didn't even open the packet because I decided in my head "I am too tired to be disappointed tonight and tomorrow is another day after all" ..wow Harry Potter reference now a Gone With The Wind one, I am either on a roll or again too tired to think much.. I was so happy to see the dress when I took it out of the packet! Here's me doing stuff in that dress...

just posing; dress-c/o sugarlips; gold bangle/bala-mum's
my mum's necklace..I think from early 80s or before..she wore it on her wedding day
that's me standing awkwardly sideways and twirling randomly..the ring on the ring finger belonged to my maternal grandpa
Here's where you can find the dress - *Winter Sherbert Dress*
The large size seems to be gone..but see the model is also twirling and all in the pictures..I did too! They have some other cool stuff too..like these pants and this black lace crop top is pretty rad too.

And here's just something before I bid adieu -

Women and Fashion in 1920's

flapper girl

1920's bridal attire

Nancy Cunard.she devoted her life to fight against racism and fascism going against her family's traditional values.a muse to several great literary and artistic minds in the early 20th century.
Clara Bow.in this photo her clothes and make-up represent every change that came about in 1920's fashion.

liberal women embracing 20's fashion

I thought i would make another post of  vintage photos but this turned out to be mostly about the 1920's. In that decade women gave up their constricting dressing styles. In 1920 the Nineteenth Amendment gave most women the right to vote in the US. Though India had to wait till 1950,the 2nd wave of feminism was happening around this time, for this to happen, mainly since it was a colonial state till 1947.
I personally love the hats from any era but these were bold style statements. Imagine how sensational it was that you could see women's bare legs out in the public for the first time in centuries. Women became more active and hence needed more practical clothing.
Coco Chanel was the most influential figure in fashion embracing short hair, incorporating men's clothes in a female wardrobe and discarding the corset. Elsa Schiaparelli is one key Italian designer of this decade who was heavily influenced by the "beyond the real" art and incorporated it into her designs.
